Amalfi Town (Amalfi Coast pt. 1)
A four part guide to the Amalfi Coast!
Why Amalfi Coast?
The Amalfi Coast is known for its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking coastal sunsets, set against the backdrop of ancient cobblestone towns. Each town, from the chic, vibrant Positano to the serene, historical Ravello, offers something unique for every traveler. Whether you’re drawn to swimming, exploring history, or relaxing by the sea, this coastline promises unforgettable experiences in every corner.
When to visit
April-June, September-October
Where to stay
I recommend staying in Amalfi when visiting the Amalfi coast. The namesake city of the larger coastal area, Amalfi town acts as a great home base. Large enough to grant plenty of options for food and things to do, while small enough to avoid the level of crowding found in nearby Positano or Capri. Amalfi also has consistent ferries each day to easily visit nearby towns for quick day-trips.
Hotel La Bussola
Hotel La Bussola is a great choice within Amalfi town. Very close walking distance to the port and Amalfi town square, but far enough away to avoid excessive noise at night. Hotel La Bussola has a rooftop bar perfect for catching a sunset drink and many balcony rooms overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Take a dip or relax on a lounge chair in their private beach club.
What to Do
Amalfi is located centrally to the other towns in the Amalfi Coast and has a very active port. I recommend an early start each day, taking the first ferry out and returning around 5pm to enjoy the evening back “home”.

Day 1 - Boat Tour & Amalfi Town
Day 1, I recommend a boat tour of the coastline to get acquainted with each of the towns you can visit via a view from the water. We took the 28/32ft leisure boat and it had ample space for 6. Our captain, Francisco, took us between Māori and Positano over 6 hours, stopping to enjoy the view, swim in secluded coves, or cliff jump for the adventurous.
Day 2 - Ravello & Atrani
Unique, mountaintop views of the Amalfi coast. Stunning villas and gardens to explore and a nice hike back down to the coast.
Day 3 - Capri
Not the pants! See the ancient ruins and blue caves of Capri. Feel free to save up for some luxury shopping while you’re on the island too.
Day 4 - Positano
Positano is the main town that many think of when dreaming of their Amalfi Coast getaway. Busier streets and more to do, Positano is a must-stop when visiting Amalfi coast!
Where to Eat
Da Maria
Right off the Amalfi Town square, this restaurant had some of the best Italian pizza we tried in Italy and at an affordable price.
Ristorante Il Chiostro
Nestled behind the cathedral in Amalfi, Ristorante Il Chiostro offers a cozy dining experience away from the bustling crowds.
Royal Gelato
Another expectant tourist trap, but was a reasonable price for a large lemon sorbet served in an Amalfi lemon. Great for sharing and sitting on the square.
Trattoria dei Cartari
Down the Main Street of Amalfi town, this restaurant is a great nearby example of “where the locals eat”. Delicious food and a nice atmosphere to enjoy an authentic Italian meal in Amalfi.
Taverna Buonvicino
If you can, reserve a table in the courtyard for dinner. A beautiful location, tucked away along some backstreets off the square.
Recommended: Spaghetti allá Colatura
Nightlife
Amalfi coast nightlife is more relaxed. Best options are rooftop bars to watch the sunset and enjoy some light music and conversation.
Sea Waves Bar
The rooftop bar of Hotel La Bussola. I recommend a pre-dinner cocktail watching the sunset. Accessible to guests of the hotel and non-guests.
